Biography
Marwood is the voice and songs of Benji Rogers, who insists it's a long story why he operates under an alias. Born in London but living much of life in New York, Benji's always loved writing songs and making music and has spent a lot of years and tens of thousands of miles doing it.
Benji's first band actually came together in LA on the West coast, with a move to NYC later on to develop solo project The Ben Rogers Band which toured up and down the East coast sharing stages with acts like the Black Crowes and Bob Dylan. Over the next couple of years the Marwood identity established itself with a regular NYC line up and appearances at many of the city's best live music clubs including the Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge and Knitting Factory. US radio stations were also quick to pick up on the band with the legendary Q104.3 offering heavy airplay as well as wide rotation on college, commercial and satellite radio, the band even charted in the top 30 US Roots Rock Americana charts.
Over the next few years Marwood continued to get solid reviews and support touring both full band and solo acoustic all over the USA, eventually the dual nationality had to get utilised though and Benji has been performing in the UK heavily over the last few years at rooms including the Broadway Market Gallery, the Bedford, Oran Mor and our own Coffee Artists Presents series. All in, the tour mileage has now boosted to some 25,000 miles per year.
Noted for quality musicianship, exceptional songwriting and passionate performance both on stage and in studio Marwood has continued to pick up universal critical praise and some disbelief they're not on the front of every music magazine on the planet; this is the kind of seasoned live show that only comes from many years of hard gigging and many miles of road.
CUrrently taking some time off from the studio to develop the Pledge Music service aimed at crowd funding albums, distributing them and helping good causes all at the same time, Marwood can still be caught for the occasional live performance in between bouts as an indie music impresario.
“Stunning alternative pop”
“With Benji Rogers' stirring and soulful voice and driving guitar hooks which the Black Crowes would be proud of, Marwood draw you into a world of lush harmonies and compelling rhythms. I defy you not to be singing along at the top of your voice by the second hearing”
“... recalls the mournful appeal of Counting Crows at their best, and the melodies stay with you after only one listen, which is a good sign”
“Great rock guitars with a sense of humor slipping in and a little fun funk, just when you were sure that could never be part of their sound, but the recordings are just a hint: in the philosophy of The Who, Marwood really shows itself LIVE!”
