Biography
Folktronica, roots and Americana styled artist Dan Clews has been working hard in the studio of late, after picking up strong reviews for his first release last year he also grabbed the attention of George Martin Music Publishing and has been locked away in the studio with legendary George’s Grammy winning son Giles getting his new album together.
It’s been an idyllic seeming journey to this point of his career, which began (and still occasionally appears) at the Clews’ family strawberry farm nestled in the green farmland of Kent, where Dan spent most strawberry seasons playing to the workers on all-night picking duty, something his father (a one time folk artist on the London scene in the 70’s) was plenty encouraging about.
Feeling the need to spread his legs Dan did some travelling busking round Europe and spending an extended amount of time in Sweden performing with band The Stars Above, rated by critics as one of Sweden’s finest bands the acclaim kept coming after Dan tried his first solo album and found himself compared to the likes of Rufus Wainwright.
The travelling also helped developed Dan’s songwriting and stylistic approach, with his sound maturing and developing into a folk sound infused with roots influences from Americana, psychedelia, classic folk, pop and the Swedish indie scene, it’s a sound that’s somehow familiar whilst staying fresh and new.
Back in the UK the publishing deal with George Martin came through, gigging commenced across the UK along with support slots with artists including Bloc Party, Jeffrey Lewis, Air Traffic, The Good Books, Clear Lake and The Brute Chorus. Since the album has been out radio stations have also been showing an interest with playouts and live sessions on Xfm, BBC and Virgin Radio.
With single releases and gigs popping up regularly throughout the country plans are also underway for a new album soon.
“a hugely talented singer songwriter plying his trade at the very top of his game, Clews elevates himself alongside the likes of Rufus Wainright”
“Has a melodic, Beatlesesque quality”
“A debut of sweetness and promise”
